Best computers for Oculus Rift

What are the best computers to have the perfect virtual reality experience on Oculus Rift?

A few weeks ago the company Oculus Rift published the minimum requirements for using its glasses with PC and Windows operating system. At the moment development for Linux and Apple devices is stalled until the end of 2016.

If you want to start using virtual reality the equipment you need is as follows:

  • Computer with at least Windows 7 Service pack 1, with quad-core Intel Core i5-4590 processor (or AMD equivalent),
  • Graphics card starting with Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 290, 8 gigabytes of RAM (we recommend 16 gigabytes).

Why do we need such powerful components?

Atman Binstock, chief architect of Oculus Rift, explains that these components have been chosen for three distinct factors:

  1. The total number of pixels to be drawn per second on the two viewer screens.
  2. The need to render in real time.
  3. The need to do so by providing images/frames with the lowest possible latency.

Did you know: A traditional Full HD game at 60 Hz requires 124 million pixels per second.

The Oculus Rift virtual glasses work in 2160×1200 at 90Hz divided in two screens, needing 233 million pixels per second; but as the viewer is placed so close to our eyes, it will need almost 400 million pixels per second. This means that for simple rendering alone a VR game will need three times the power used from a GPU to render at 1080p.

In the last 2 years at TwoReality we have tested many different computers to get to understand which is the best PC that allows us to live the best virtual reality experience. We have used different laptops from brands such as Asus, Dell and MSI, and compared the frame rate at different refresh rates.

We have realized that not always the paper power of a computer is enough; what is needed is a computer for gaming because the components are prepared to work with video or 3D experiences that need a lot of ram and a lot of work of video card in real time.

For this reason, the computers best prepared to be used with virtual reality devices are the computers developed by the brand MSI.

At TwoReality we are currently using 2 different models of MSI laptops:

  1. The GT72 2QE DOMINATOR PRO
  2. The GT72 2QD DOMINATOR G  with the new 5th generation Intel® Core™ i7 processor and Nahimic Sound Technology with immersive 3D processing

These laptops allow us to always have with us a light and practical computer that will never have problems with virtual reality devices because from the RAM to the graphics card are designed to maintain the best performance in gaming.
