Education in the Metaverse
Put down the books and pick up your virtual reality goggles
You are in Rome in the year 160. You can see its people, interact, check how each building was built, and much more. This is what Mark Zuckerberg promised us in his introductory video to the metaverse, and it will certainly be hard to forget. Education brought to the metaverse can mean a before and after for schools and universities around the world, giving students an experience much closer to reality. All this is still in the development phase, but we can already see how many creators are offering their ideas to the public. Below, we will review the advantages that education based on the metaverse can offer us, as well as the infinite possibilities that companies will be able to exploit in the near future.
Everything remains on paper
Most children and adult students today have lost their enthusiasm for learning. The little ones celebrate a day “without school” as a great victory and adults celebrate endlessly when exams are over. We want to get out of learning as soon as possible. An unequivocal example is the following data: In Spain, 16% of students drop out of high school before finishing their studies. Six points above the European average. In other words, education is no longer exciting. Endless paragraphs of text and activities that never seem to end are the punishment that millions of students have to endure every year. They may be studying a very interesting subject, but the book they are studying only uses words, black ink without any emotion. What can we do to make knowledge come alive, making it interesting again? This is a question that only the metaverse can answer. In its introductory video of the Facebook metaverse (now Meta) there is a section dedicated to education. It features a very young girl and an older girl, and in the next scene the little girl says she has to do a paper on Saturn. Then they put on virtual reality goggles that allow them to see the planet in all its splendor, in three dimensions and with the possibility of interaction. Without a doubt, the video leaves you wanting more. It opens up the possibilities for total immersion in what has been learned, for fun, dynamic and useful teaching. Anyone can forget the word “Saturn” but, would you forget a space trip in virtual reality? Surely not!
Education in the metaverse:
Advantages and more advantages
Given what we’ve seen, we can agree that the metaverse could turn education as we know it today upside down. We have created a short list of advantages for you to see for yourself how education could look like tomorrow. We could be looking at the ultimate education system, where people will regain the drive to learn and teach others:
- Visualize and interact with what has been learned.
The first advantage is the immersion in the subject matter. Instead of learning by reading about the Roman Colosseum, what better way to learn than by attending a show yourself! This would not only help students to learn, but would also awaken an unusual interest in them.
- Low dropout rate.
Once new technologies were implemented in the classroom, students would be much more entertained than they are now. Virtual reality would make classes more enjoyable, resulting in higher student enrollment.
- More satisfied students.
Right now you can’t know what your future is going to be like. If you’re a law student, it’s hard to imagine the day-to-day life of a lawyer without having experienced it first. But thanks to virtual reality simulations, you’ll be able to get an idea of what you’re getting into at all times. It’s no secret that our society is moving towards total digitalization. Little by little, most analog instruments will become obsolete, and children will start writing on tablets and computers rather than on paper. We are eager to discover first-hand how education will enjoy this radical change, offering all kinds of opportunities to educators and learners alike. The metaverse is not coming to education tomorrow or next week, but we will still patiently watch the bright future that awaits us.
