What is the Metaverse and what possibilities does it offer us?
We tell you in detail what the Metaverse is and all the possibilities, advantages and applications of Virtual Reality that this digital universe offers us.
The Metaverse is the “web3”, the evolution of the current internet giving us the opportunity to create a new universe that we had not imagined. It is also called meta-world or X-Verse.
However, as modern as it may sound, the Metaverse is another concept rebranded from several other events of previous years:
- Second Life, the virtual environment in which we can have a parallel life, with avatars, shopping, sales, games, clothing and pets, was born in 2003 and today has 900,000 subscribers.
- Roblox was born in 2004 also as a virtual environment and today has 31 million daily users.
- Fortnite is also a space for social experiences and can belong to the metaverse as long as it is interconnected with the other virtual worlds.
All 3 are metaverses – that is, environments beyond the universe – and allow you to enjoy experiences on the Internet, meet friends, buy and sell with your coins, adopt a personality opposite to that of real life in a parallel world.
The metaverse of Facebook and large companies
Today this definition is relevant because Meta (formerly Facebook) decided to relaunch with a new name and announce that the Internet as we know it will become a three-dimensional space.
Companies such as Sony, Microsoft, Google and Apple have also been developing their own metaverse, so Facebook is not the first and will not be the only one.
Virtual Reality glasses to explore the Metaverse
There we will be able to interact with virtual reality glasses, living as in real life and performing searches, watching videos, listening to music just like today, but immersed in a computer-designed environment.
Today these glasses are great, but in the next year we will see versions from sunglasses manufacturers that will incorporate virtual reality.
Maybe in the future they will be a chip in our body?
The word is not new either because it was created by the American writer Neal Stephenson in the 1992 novel Snow Crash in which humans possessed three-dimensional avatars inhabiting a virtual world.
There was also metaverse in the movie Avatar because some of its inhabitants entered this virtual world thanks to an avatar that represented them there, while they were connected in a cabin on “earth”.
In this way, there is nothing new in Facebook’s announcement – now Meta – however, to think that a social network of nearly 3 billion people, half of humanity, can move into three-dimensional space is shocking.
It is important to know that to enjoy the metaverse it is essential to have virtual reality glasses that cost at least USD300, so only a portion of these users will move there, for now.
The main manufacturer of virtual reality glasses is Oculus, owned by Facebook, so the two businesses will walk hand in hand boosting each other.
In its design, the metaverse is an infinite world of virtual communities where people can meet, do business, work and play online.
You can also share content in virtual and augmented reality, or buy and sell properties using cryptocurrencies.
This collaborative space is already valued at $37 billion and belongs to the Big Tech category, although it is even bigger.
There it is possible to hold cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Crypto and use them to buy assets, such as investments in land and buildings, works of art in the form of NFT (Non Fungible Token).
All of them are virtual elements, which are stored in a computer on the Internet and can be enjoyed by projecting them on a mobile device or LED screen.
The possibilities of entering the Metaverse
To enter the metaverse is to put on virtual reality goggles, transporting us to an imaginary, computer-designed scenario and sit in a virtual armchair to watch a Netflix video in a room that does not exist in real life.
Our companions can be next to us or in other cities, however they will be represented by their avatars who will see us and their movements will be presented by their avatar in our virtual room.
Also there we will be able to go shopping in our avatar, visit an e-commerce and buy clothes for our avatar, paying with cryptocurrencies.
Or maybe we want to sit in a cafe and read the book we have advanced on our mobile devices such as Kindle, Books, Audible or any other e-reader connected to the internet.
Today we must see our artists in Zoom sessions on flat screens, but thanks to the metaverse we will be able to enter three-dimensional scenarios where we will sit and watch the artist.
We could all have the best seat in the theater simultaneously, or the best location to watch the favorite sport streamed.
In more serious terms, a worker in Europe could share his experience with a worker in Latin America, teaching how to disassemble an engine thousands of miles away.
Today we can take a call in our pajamas and not turn on the camera.
In the metaverse we can attend a networking event, with our avatar in full regalia, while lying on our bed.
This metaverse as we describe it may be up and running within fifteen years and those countries that take advantage of its labor force and skills will be able to provide remote digital services to developed countries.
Later we will go into detail to analyze these major issues we have mentioned to understand how to take advantage of this “new internet”.
